Through the Social Mirror: Self-Censorship and the Loss of Authenticit
The presence of other people constantly forces an individual to evaluate themselves through the lens of public opinion. We involuntarily begin to adjust our actions and thoughts, always considering how they will be perceived, which leads to self-censorship. As noted in one excerpt, “We view ourselves through the eyes of others, as if we are constantly looking into a ‘social mirror,’ always thinking about how others will view a particular action of ours... We very rarely do anything without considering how our action will be understood or perceived by others” (source: link txt). In other words, the constant awareness that every word and action may trigger a “socio-psychic echo” forces us to conform to the expectations of those around us.Moreover, life in society reveals our weaknesses and shortcomings that might have gone unnoticed in solitude. Another passage emphasizes that living with others breeds constant comparison and exposes personal insecurities: “When I begin to live constantly with other people, I discover my own inadequacy and my weaknesses... I dwell in darkness, despair, and anxiety” (source: link txt). These experiences lead one to doubt the ability to freely express thoughts, fearing judgment or misunderstanding. Thus, the constant presence of other people creates a situation where the individual not only worries about being evaluated but also feels pressured to adjust their thoughts and behaviors to conform to social norms. This suppresses the natural expression of individuality and restricts genuine self-expression.Supporting citation(s):“We view ourselves through the eyes of others, as if we are constantly looking into a ‘social mirror,’ always thinking about how others will view a particular action of ours... Love becomes an illusion. I am doomed to loneliness and death” (source: link txt).
