The Inseparable Unity of the Trinity
From a theological perspective, the Trinity is not viewed as a single divine principle that is “divided” into parts capable of functioning independently or becoming autonomous entities. Rather, it is maintained that the one divine being is revealed in three persons, between whom there is only a distinction understood at the level of “thought” rather than a division or deliberate dismemberment of the essence.As stated in one source: "In Divinity, the Trinitarian nature is given and revealed in the undivided Unity of the One Being. … the distinction exists only in thought — the distinction never transforms into a dissection, just as the difference never becomes separateness. An indivisible division, for the persons of the One God are not only similar, but indeed identical in essence." (source: link txt)This means that although each Person of the Trinity has its own specific characteristic and could, conditionally, be considered separately, in reality all three Persons are the same divine existence. Another source provides an analogy with a vector, where decomposing it into components does not change the essence of the resulting effect, which helps to understand how the one action of God manifests through three persons while remaining indivisible: "3. Indivisibility. Each component of a vector is absolutely connected with it… For each of Them is no less united with the others than with Itself…" (source: link txt)Thus, from a theological point of view, the interpretation of the Trinity as a single entity does not imply it is capable of a true division or dismemberment of its essence. The distinctions among the Persons exist only to express the unique aspects of the singular Divine action and the relationships within this unity. This explains why any attempt to consider the Trinity as divided leads to heresy: each Person does not act independently but rather in undivided cooperation, which is the foundation of the Christian understanding of divine unity.
