Beyond the Surface: Discovering the True Essence of Beauty

The world around us constantly reminds us that attractiveness is measured not only by the reflection of our external appearance but also by the depth of our inner world. In modern society, where attention is often captured by visible glitter, a person's true dignity is defined by their character, spiritual qualities, and inner harmony. We are accustomed to judging others based on first impressions; however, beneath the superficial layers of appearance lies an inexhaustible source of strength and warmth—a timeless beauty that can only be perceived through the lens of experience and wisdom. It is this inner value, manifested in kindness, sincerity, and profound spirituality, that naturally leads to genuine success and happiness. Ultimately, when we learn to value personal qualities and inner treasures more, our self-perception will transform, and our lives will be filled with a special meaning that resists temporary changes and fleeting fashion trends.

How do you assess your external attractiveness, and how important is it for your self-perception?

I believe that external attractiveness is merely a reflection of the visible side of a person. While it can be important, it does not determine our true worth. One source states: “We are often inclined to focus on appearances and fail to see the essence behind them. When we meet someone, or even look at ourselves, we see either what is damaged or some kind of external attractiveness. But it takes great experience to penetrate beyond the superficial layers of trivialities, the mundane, or even a sort of attractive flaw, and perceive the beauty that God sees. Father Evgraf Kovalevsky said that when God looks at us, He does not search for our successes or failures; in our depths, He sees His Likeness, the image of Himself imprinted on us.” (source: link txt)

For me, self-perception is formed much more by the inner world, character, and spiritual qualities than by purely external characteristics. In the same vein, another author reminds us: “You, dear and kind, are undoubtedly beautiful in your own way—even if not breathtakingly so—wipe away your tears and smile. Only if you do not conceive of your life outside of screens and runways is it natural to be upset by not having eyelashes like Greta Garbo’s. But if you wish to live a quiet and happy life, you will succeed much more than those who turn heads on the street. It is trivial yet undeniable: a person with a deep soul and a kind heart, a person harboring mystery, does not need the proportions of 90-60-90.” (source: link txt)

Thus, although appearance plays a role in how others perceive us, it is truly the inner content that determines our self-perception and genuine attractiveness. This perspective helps us avoid getting overly fixated on the fleeting changes of our outward appearance, for true dignity remains constant regardless of time.
